Three formats, three jobs

JPEG is a delivery format. It compresses by removing detail that human vision is poor at seeing, which makes files small enough to move around while looking identical to the original at normal viewing sizes. Almost every device and program on earth can open it.

PNG is a lossless format with transparency. It keeps every pixel exactly and can store an alpha channel, so it is the right container for logos, icons, interface elements, screenshots, and cut-outs that must sit on top of other content.

RAW is a capture format. It is the unprocessed data a camera sensor records, holding more exposure latitude than any finished image. Photographers edit from RAW and export to JPEG or PNG. Nobody delivers RAW to end users, because it is proprietary per camera brand and requires dedicated software.

Why JPEG for royalty-free photos

An uncompressed 8K image is roughly 95 MB. As a high-quality JPEG the same photo is around 8 to 15 MB, and you would need a very large monitor and a magnifying glass to find the difference. As a PNG it would be 40 to 70 MB with no visible improvement, because a full-frame photo has no transparent regions to justify the format. Multiply that across a project with thirty photos and the choice of JPEG is the difference between a download you barely notice and one you schedule.

Compatibility settles it. Print houses, content management systems, email tools, slide software, and social platforms all accept JPEG without conversion. Royalty-free photos exist to be dropped into other people's workflows, and JPEG is the format those workflows already speak.

Why not RAW

The photos here are AI-assisted imagery. They were rendered, not captured by a sensor, so there is no RAW file behind them. The rendered output is saved once, at full resolution and high JPEG quality. Asking for RAW is asking for something that never existed for this catalogue, which is also true of most conventional stock sites, where RAW is withheld even when it does exist.

Is quality at risk?

Only if you mistreat the file. JPEG degrades when it is saved, edited, and saved again in the same format many times, because each save re-compresses. The fix is habit, not format:

  • Treat the downloaded JPG as a master. Never overwrite it.
  • Edit in your tool of choice and export copies for each use.
  • For web, export at the pixel size the page needs. Serving 8K to a phone is waste.
  • For print, hand the printer the master or a lossless export such as TIFF, whichever they prefer.

When you need a PNG

You might, for a cut-out. Open the JPG, isolate the element you want, and export that layer as PNG with transparency. The JPG is an excellent starting point for that work because it holds the full 8K of detail. The format of the source does not restrict the format of what you make from it.

Format is fixed; the real work is choosing the subject. Browse the tag index, search for a term such as food, open a photo, and check the spec block for dimensions and file size before you download.
